Fiber Arts Entry Takes Best of Show Honors at 54th Nescatunga Arts Festival

 The fiber arts entry of quilts, weaving and crocheted items from Nescatunga Arts Festival fine arts vendor Mary Riegel from Alva earned the Best of Show award at the close of the 54th Nescatunga Arts Festival held at the Alva Recreation Complex’s Pete and Ruth Leslie Fieldhouse June 6-7.


Two new awards were implemented this year, giving the patrons of the festival a chance to vote for their favorite booth from among the 43 fine artists and crafters booths, as well as their favorite quilt on display from among the nearly 40 quilts in the annual Quilt Show.


The People’s Choice Booth and a $50 prize went to Cheyenne Wilson with Bubbles Stained Glass and Fine Art of Alva with her stained-glass entries in Designer Arts and Jewelry. Wilson also placed first in the category.


The People’s Choice Award in the Quilt Show went to Nelletta Johnson with a quilt titled “Kentucky Spirit” by Judy Niemeyer, earning her a $50 prize. It was quilted by Margaret Stagl.


A list of other fine artists who earned ribbons and cash prizes at the 54th festival follows:


  • Designer Arts and Jewelry (created in glass, wood, mineral, etc.) – first, Wilson, Alva; second, Valarie Case, Alva; third, Riegel

  • Digital Art (new category, computer-generated artwork) – first, Valarie Case; second, Beatriz Penaflor, Shattuck

  • Fiber Arts (quilting, weaving, basketry, knitting, crocheting) – first, Riegel

  • Graphics (pencil, pen & ink, pastels, printmaking, etc.) – first, Angelia Case, Alva; second, Salye Gorrell, Enid; third, Warren Little, Alva

  • Mixed Media – first, Gorrell; second, Marsha Campbell, Tulsa; third, Little

  • Painting (oils, acrylics, watercolors) – first, Angelia Case; second, Gorrell; third, Marsha Campbell

  • Photography – first, Siera Doherty, Alva; second, Valarie Case; third, Angelia Case

  • Pottery/Sculpture (may be ceramic, wood, metal, mineral, etc.) – first, Yusuf Etudaiye, Tulsa; second, Kellie Walker, Drummond; third, Gorrell

  • Student winner: Kayla Maier, Alva


Roger Riggins of Freedom served as this year’s fine arts judge.


Fine artists are eligible for one award of cash and ribbons in each category. Cash awards in the following amounts will be mailed to the winners: Best of Show, $200; first place, $150; second place, $100; and third place, $75, and student prize, $25.


Winners of the Poppin’ Around Alva Shop Local contest, with each receiving $50 in Alva Chamber of Commerce Chamber Bucks, are Shawna Gilbert and Amaya Evans.
