Northwestern Alumni to be Featured at October First Friday with Watercolor Workshop, Painting Display

Kristy San Soucie sits with the display of her paintings and her students’ work at the 2024 Nescatunga Arts Festival in June. She is offering a workshop on beginning watercolor painting at the Oct. 4 First Friday Art Walk from 6-8 p.m. at the Runnymede. The workshop is $10.

October’s First Friday Art Walk on Oct. 4 from 6-8 p.m. at the Runnymede in downtown Alva will follow a Homecoming theme by featuring two Northwestern Oklahoma State University alumni with an art display and workshop.

Join Kristy (Bauman) San Soucie for an evening of beginner watercolor painting on the second floor of the facility. Students will be creating two, fall-themed greeting cards using a few simple techniques and supplies that can be purchased anywhere.

The workshop is $10 and will include the two cards and paint supplies. The workshop is open to the first 12 people to register by emailing NescatungaArts@yahoo.com. Payment can be made at the workshop.

San Soucie, who graduated from Northwestern in 2002 with a degree in E-Commerce, is the vice president of the Nescatunga Arts and Humanities Council and has shown her artwork at the Nescatunga Arts Festival. She is an art teacher at South Barber Schools in Kiowa, Kansas.

Josh Hinton, who graduated from Northwestern in 2023 with a degree in mass communication, will have a display of his paintings on the first floor of the facility.

Hinton said Northwestern helped him grow his art with its mass comm and art programs by helping him learn more about color theory, composition and form. Although, he said this is not how his art journey began. He said he credits watching Bob Ross about seven years ago. He would follow along and paint with him, which helped him to continue to grow his art skills.

He said he uses primarily acrylics and oils and typically uses bright, bold colors in an impressionistic style with a touch of humor, adding that he mostly paints landscapes, animals and still life.

Hinton, who currently works in the marketing department at Atwood’s Store Support, has displayed his artwork at the Nescatunga Arts Festival.

Anyone who would like to support the arts in Alva is welcome to join the Council. Yearly membership dues are $25. Checks may be mailed to P.O. Box 152, Alva, OK 73717 or payments may be made via Nescatunga’s PayPal account at https://paypal.me/NescatungaArts or by searching for the email NescatungaArts@yahoo.com within the service.
